Downtown Pensacola’s main spine had a flooding problem and hadn’t seen a real stormwater or ADA overhaul since 1999. Fixing it meant taking five city blocks down to dirt and rebuilding the corridor from the ground up — a $10 million reconstruction with Palafox closed to vehicles for roughly five months, against a completion date the City backed with financial incentive. Site & Utility, LLC delivered early and earned the bonus.
Crews demolished and reconstructed five blocks while every storefront stayed open for business. The drainage fix drove the job: 43 storm structures and more than 1,700 feet of new stormwater piping engineered to pull water off a chronically flood-prone corridor. From there the street was rebuilt for people — wider sidewalks, brick pavers, new crosswalks, full ADA compliance, over 2,000 linear feet of the America’s First Settlement Trail, and granite ballast stone planters matched to Plaza Ferdinand with full irrigation. An on-site archaeologist monitored excavation throughout — standard for digging in America’s first settlement.
